About this Role

The Associate Portfolio Manager – Risk and Performance Management is responsible for the development, assessment, and oversight of equity strategies for taxable and tax-exempt investors. Our portfolio managers work with leading-edge portfolio risk and optimization technologies. Ideal candidates must have excellent problem-solving capabilities, a high degree of attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a passion for research. The position requires solid verbal and written communication aptitude and the ability to work directly with clients on complicated tax- and risk-modeling problems. The PM must be able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a time-sensitive environment, be able to take initiative, and be comfortable taking on responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

Assess and analyze the performance of accounts, composites, and investment strategies using statistical analysis and attribution reporting

Create and update Fact Sheets, backtests, and data for marketing presentations

Monitor, assess, and analyze portfolio risk characteristics relative to Aperio internal standards and client objectives

Apply statistical analysis to historical trade data to identify trends and outliers

Develop and implement a remediation plan to address performance and risk management issues

Ensure the completeness and accuracy of investment universes and security-level data by maintaining Aperio’s security master

Support research efforts and develop proposals to improve existing investment strategies and launch new strategies

Support research projects to deliver solutions to problems posed by internal and external clients

Construction and analysis of large, complex data sets to provide answers to research questions

Creation of informative visualizations of complex data as requested by the team

Communication of technical issues to broad audiences  

Develop strong understanding of Aperio’s systems, strategies, processes, and procedures in relation to Portfolio Management

Support Portfolio Management team in portfolio analysis and rebalancing


Programming skills including Python, R, SQL, and statistical packages

Expertise in statistics and financial mathematics

Experience with multi-factor risk models (e.g., Barra) and tax-efficient client optimization

Strong Excel skills

Solid verbal and written skills

Ability to take initiative and drive projects to completion

BA/BS in a quantitative discipline. MS Preferred

Five plus years of relevant finance work experience

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
